Electrolysis Permanent Hair Removal

"Say Goodbye to Waxing & Tweezing"

Nascent Skin and Beauty Clinic - Electrolysis SpecialistsElectrolysis – Whilst recent technology for hair removal involves both laser and/or intense pulsed light (IPL) systems. And whilst both are effective at hair reduction for most people, they are not generally very effective on white, grey or red hair. Neither are they effective for persons with darker skins (Fitzpatrick Scale IV and above) as there is an increased risk of hyperpigmentation being caused by the light process.

Electrolysis however is a permanent hair removal technique that has been utilised for more than 100 years. ALL hair colours and skin types can benefit from electrolysis. Electrolysis hair removal doesn’t target hair pigments (colour) like laser and IPL but attacks the follicle itself. People that aren’t good candidates for laser or IPL hair reduction (grey hair, white-blonde hair, red hair) can still get electrolysis for permanent hair removal.

Today’s medical electrolysis hair removal devices destroy the growth centre of the hair with an electric current that travels through a single solid sterile disposable needle device. Most areas of the body can be treated with electrolysis, including the eyebrows, face, abdomen, thighs, breasts, and legs. There are generally no permanent side effects, but sometimes a temporary, slight reddening of the skin may occur.

Our highly experienced staff insert a very fine needle probe into the natural opening of the hair follicle, alongside the hair. A small amount of electrical current is then applied through the sterile probe. The electrical current travels down the length of the hair follicle destroying the papillae, ending further hair growth. The hair will either expel itself or be removed with tweezers by the therapist as the treatment is carried out.

Electrolysis hair removal treats a single hair at a time and is therefore a lengthy, but effective process

Nascent Skin and Beauty Clinic - Electrolysis Hair RemovalElectrolysis hair removal is a process of permanent hair elimination and as hair grows in cycles, a series of electrolysis treatments are required to tackle the various hair growth cycles – it may take up to 18 months to see hairs in all these growth cycles.

Electrolysis hair removal can be used on almost all areas of the body and is suitable for both men and women, and on all hair and skin colours.

The areas most treated with are the –

  • Lip
  • Chin
  • Jawline

Occasionally other areas are suitable and this can be discussed with your therapist. Ideally the hair needs to be stronger than fluff and can be any colour. Facial fluff  (peach fuzz or down hair) cannot be treated as the follicle is too small.

FAQ

The number of treatments for this method of hair removal will vary for each individual. Some find that weekly treatments are needed, while others will skip a week in between each session. One treatment will last anywhere from five (5) minutes to thirty (30) minutes. Multiple sessions are needed as hair has three different growing stages (growing, resting, and shedding). Since all hair will not be in the same phase, a number of treatments are done to be the most effective hair removal. Once a series of electrolysis has been done, the hair will be permanently removed. No maintenance is required with electrolysis.

Electrolysis has a proven track record, with removing hair either permanently or for long periods of time. Many different skin and hair types can use electrolysis, as the pigment will not be targeted like a laser treatment. Those that cannot have laser treatments done are good candidates for electrolysis hair removal.

Hair follicles that are bent can cause issues for those that have the electrolysis treatment. The hair follicles can be bent by waxing or tweezing that was previously done. This will make it harder for the needle to destroy the hair follicle. Another disadvantage is that multiple treatments are needed. On average, a person will need anywhere from fifteen (15) to thirty (30) sessions to have permanent hair removal. The skin can also become discoloured if the treatment is not applied correctly.

There is some pain associated with electrolysis. Each hair follicle on the body part having the procedure done will feel any pain that is associated with the treatment. Electrolysis has been reported to feeling like a pricking and stinging sensation.

Electrolysis should never be performed on a person that has a pacemaker. Hair should never be removed on places that have a mole or a birthmark.

Post treatment, the skin can be swollen, red or tender. The hair should begin to disappear several weeks to months after the first treatment. Possible side effects include scarring, including keloids, and changes in the skin colour.

When deciding upon doing electrolysis, it is important to find the correct person to perform this procedure. Look for a qualified skin specialist that has been certified or licensed, making sure that it is up to date. Asking for recommendations from family, friends and co-workers is often helpful.

It is important to get a consultation first to ask questions and concerns about the procedure. Good questions to ask include how long the procedure will take, how it will feel, how many treatments are expected, the cost of each treatment, and how many clients they have performed the procedure on.

When at the consultation, look around. Notice if the place is clean, if the clinicians seem knowledgeable about the procedure. Ask if you can meet the skin specialist that will be performing the procedure on you to ensure it’s a specialised clinician.
