LED Light Phototherapy A total skin rejuvenation solution

We all want that radiant glow that comes from healthy skin. LED Light Phototherapy harnesses the healing power of light for a total skin rejuvenation solution. By sending soothing energy deep into the tissue, LED Phototherapy works on a cellular level to combat active acne, reduce redness and rosacea, stimulate collagen production, induce faster healing and more.

LED Light Phototherapy Treatment

The deep penetrating and soothing LED lights are ideal for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improving uneven skin tone, targeting active acne and illuminating the skin. By heightening your skin cells internal functions, LED Light Therapy will induce faster healing making it the perfect treatment to combine with your other skin treatments.

Typical treatments are fast and effective, lasting between ten (10) and thirty (30) minutes. With uniquely coloured LED lights available (red, near infrared and blue), your treatment can be tailored to suit your individual skin goals.

LED is an acronym for “Light Emitting Diode”. These are very small semiconductors and are a computer chip, encased in a glass-like resin, which emits therapeutic wavelengths (or colours) of light energy when a current is passed through them. Unlike laser, LED Phototherapy is non-invasive and non-thermal, and hence requires no recovery time after treatments.

LED Phototherapy was originally developed to fast-track the healing of wounds and post surgery scars. The rejuvenation of healthy skin was also observed which turns out to be a happy coincidence for those seeking help with their skin conditions, as well as those seeking repair and rejuvenation of skins suffering acne, rosacea and sun damage.

LED Phototherapy, also known as LED Photobiomodulation and LED Light Therapy,  is making a name for itself on the beauty scene at the moment. It’s the “must have” treatment appearing in specialist skin clinics, and not surprisingly on celebrities’ Instagram accounts. LED Phototherapy is a proven, pain-free, non-invasive, soothing and rejuvenating skin treatment and an anti-aging modality.

You may have heard it referred to as Blue light, Red light, Near Infrared light, Omnilux, Healite, Lightstim or perhaps Dermalux.

While Omnilux, Healite, Lightstim and Dermalux are actual brand names, Red, Near Infrared (NIR) or Blue Light refers to the actual colour of the LED light and the type of treatment (Red is great for lines and wrinkles, NIR Near Infrared for acute and chronic pain as well as rosacea redness and pigmentation, and Blue is anti-bacterial and used to treat acne and excessive oil production), essentially these are all forms of what is termed “LED Phototherapy”.

Red ~ Blue ~ Near Infrared LED Light Phototherapy can aid skin repair and rejuvenation for the following skin conditions;-

Fine Lines & Wrinkles

Reducing Pore Size

Skin Brightening

Uneven Skin Tone

What is LED Light Phototherapy?

So, we’ve all been told exposure to light is supposed to be bad for our skin right?  Well, that isn’t necessarily always true. UVA and UVB are very damaging to our skin, however with the right amount of red, blue, and near infrared light our skin can also become re-energised. It helps us produce vitamin D and provides energy and serotonin and can also accelerate our skin’s natural repair processes.

LED Phototherapy DOES NOT deliver UVA, UVB, UVC or radioactive light (like an x-ray).

  • UVA light is in the range; 400nm – 320nm;
  • UVB light 320nm – 290nm;
  • UVC light 290nm – 100nm and
  • X-rays are 1nm.
  • LED is delivered in the visible light spectrum range of between 420nm to 750nm (nanometres) and Near Infrared LED is delivered just above the visible light range at 830nm – wavelengths above UVA, UVB, UVC and X-rays.

LED technology uses wavelengths from the visible light spectrum as well as near infrared, however they do not contain harmful ultraviolet wavelengths and therefore cannot damage skin tissue.

NASA Development of today’s LED Light Systems

In the 1960’s, LED lights were essentially used only for bedside alarm clocks and camera battery alert lights when they were first mass-produced, because a combination of low energy and the fact that they could only emit red, green, or yellow light restricted their usability.

Fast forward to the 1990’s, and Prof Harry Whelan and his group at NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Space Medicine Laboratory began experiments with LED’s that had less divergence, much higher and more stable output powers, and quasimonochromaticity, whereby nearly all of the photons produced by the LED were at a specifically rated wavelength. The outcome, they noticed an increase in plant growth under a certain wavelength of light. So, if it worked for plant growth, could it also work for skin and cells?

NASA then began experimenting with the same rated LED’s to speed the healing of wounds, because in zero-gravity situations wounds don’t quite heal as fast as they would otherwise. Test results were again positive, and research continued and developed into skin cancer treatment and cosmetic arenas.

LED Light Therapy as a Skin Rejuvenation Treatment

LED Phototherapy is based on the principle that living cells are able to absorb and be influenced by light. The treatment has long been recognised for its regenerating and anti-inflammatory properties. It is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses LED light bulbs to emits wavelengths of light energy, that targets deep into the skin cells for multiple skin and anti-aging benefits. It is painless and relaxing and is cost effective with amazing results, safe for all skin types and colours.

LED Light Therapy uses colour wavelengths of visible light which have specific skin benefits. As a result of aging, skin disorders or trauma, healthy skin cells are compromised and unable to renew themselves normally.

The skin utilises the light as a source of energy to fuel the repair and rejuvenation of damaged cells or, in the case of treating acne, kill bacteria. The energy stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, boosts circulation and accelerates tissue repair. During the treatment, you’ll simply lie underneath a light screen while the device does all the work.

The re-energisation of the cells allow for faster cell regeneration, giving a younger healthier look to any skin. Think of it like a plant going through photosynthesis; energy is gathered from these light sources to help the cell reproduction and repair in the most natural way. This process is known as photobiomodulation.

What does this mean on a cellular level? Well the mitochondria is responsible for the vast majority of ATP (Adenosine Tri-phosphate – known as the “energy currency of life”) production in our cells, however if the cell is damaged through injury or trauma, its production levels of ATP significantly decrease. Scientists have discovered that cells exposed to the right frequencies of infra-red light cause a resurgence in the mitochondria’s production of ADP (Adenosine Diphosphate) which then link with free oxygen singlets in our cells to get that vital ATP back to work on repairing the skin.

LED treatments are particularly good for acne, rosacea, pigmentation, and building skin density, especially when done in a series. Each treatment is specifically calculated for your individual needs. We also use DermaFrac Serum Infusion Post Micro Skin Needling, and recommend this treatment be added to compliment any LED treatment.

We often associate light exposure with skin aging and damage

Light also has many positive influences on the body

Medical Grade LED Light Therapy Systems

With the recent advent of LED systems that can produce controlled power delivery (referred to as Medical Grade LED Systems) and LED’s that have less divergence, much higher and more stable outputs as well as quasimonochromaticity, it has become possible to ensure that the therapeutic light energy applied to the skin is at an exact and correct wavelength to treat a specific skin condition. When this occurs the cells in the dermis layer of skin will convert that light energy into ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is the fuel that the cell uses to do its job.

The fibroblast cells in the dermis layer have the job of producing collagen (which give the skin fullness or that plumped look) and elastin (which give the skin the ability to bounce back). Thus, LED gives the cells a ‘full tank of fuel’ and these fibroblast cells start to produce collagen and elastin like when one was 20-25 years old.

In respect of LED’s being able to heal and regenerate the dermis, the clinical studies support only LED’s rated exactly to 830nm (nano metres or nano meters); 633nm and 415nm

LED light also helps us produce vitamin D, provides energy and serotonin, and can accelerate the skin’s natural repair processes.

Different wavelengths of LED (Blue – Red and Near Infrared) can be used to target various skin conditions from acne to aging skin. Each wavelength will penetrate to a different depth and each will have a different effect on the skin.

  • LED Phototherapy is a versatile treatment that can be applied throughout any age management or problem skin treatment programme for corrective, maintenance and preventative results.
  • LED Phototherapy is also safe if you are pregnant or breastfeeding – so you can have glowing, fresh rejuvenated yummy-mummy skin and with NO downtime!
  • LED Phototherapy (light therapy) promotes skin rejuvenation at a cellular level and harnesses the healing power of light for a total skin rejuvenation solution.
  • LED when applied with controlled delivery (a medical grade system), is excellent for addressing a large variety of skin issues and concerns.

An incredible fact about LED treatments is that the light is only the ‘GO’ button to the healing process, meaning that the healing effects of your treatment will continue beyond your appointment time! The production of collagen in our skin begins to decrease as we age, and as a result, wrinkles begin to form as elasticity lessens. The promotion of collagen production from LED Phototherapy helps to repair skin and reduce wrinkles. It also helps pre and post-operative bruising.

LED technology uses wavelengths from the visible light spectrum as well as near infrared, however they do not contain harmful ultraviolet wavelengths and therefore cannot damage skin tissue.

The differences between the positive and negative effects of light are the amount, and the parts of the light spectrum we are exposed to. Ongoing exposure to UV is very damaging but controlled levels of 830nm Near Infrared, 633nm Red, and 415nm Blue light are clinically proven to be beneficial.

LED Phototherapy should not be confused with IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or laser, both of which use pulsed light and are designed to damage or destroy certain cells. LED Phototherapy is non-invasive and non-thermal, involves the use of continuous light rather than pulses of light, does not destroy cells or skin and therefore requires no recovery time after treatments.

LED Phototherapy should also not be confused with Photodynamic Therapy. Although both use LED light on the skin, Photodynamic Therapy requires pre-treatment of the skin with aminolevulenic acid (ALA) and this significantly changes the light reaction in the skin to produce a form of oxygen that kills nearby cells, and is used specifically for the treatment of cancers. Photodynamic therapy is a treatment performed specifically by trained medical personnel.

Medical-grade LED machines use ONLY specified wavelengths and photon intensity LED’s that have controlled power density – hence you will get a reaction and you will get a result

When the LED therapeutic light energy is applied at the correct wavelength, the cells in the dermis layer of skin will convert that light energy into ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is the fuel that the cell uses to do its job.

Based on published data, LED Phototherapy is proving to have more and more viable applications in many fields of medicine. However, it must always be remembered that not any old LED device will do. In order to be effective, LED Phototherapy must operate with controlled delivery.

  1. If the wavelength does not match the target cell then there will be no absorption and therefore no reaction and no result.
  2. If the photon intensity is too low, again there will be no reaction and no result.
  3. If the power density is too low, then most likely there will be no reaction and no result.
Skin cells that are energised using LED Phototherapy function better and can regenerate up to 200% faster, which in turn leads to a more youthful, healthy and radiant complexion

Clinically supported LED wavelengths

415 nm (BLUE light)

Blue LED Light when applied at 415nm destroys the bacteria which causes acne and helps in the prevention of breakouts. Exposure of the Blue light at 415nm to the p.acnes bacteria is toxic and kills that bacteria immediately. It also helps to balance sebum production and improve skin clarity. Applied in combination with Red and Near Infrared light, the combined treatment offers enhanced anti-blemish results and is excellent as a post-treatment procedure to help minimise breakouts and reduce redness. Also proven to help with low serotonin levels and for those suffering forms of anxiety or depression. They call this the “happy light” in the Medical Field.

Blemish fighting Blue light destroys the bacteria which causes spots and helps in the prevention of breakouts. Great for acne, problematic, oily and congested skins.

Key Benefits of  BLUE LED LIGHT

  • Anti-bacterial action without irritation
  • Helps acne & blemish prone skins
  • Prevents breakouts
  • Balances oil production
  • Improves skin clarity
  • UV Free alternative for eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis

633nm (RED light)

Red LED Light when applied at 633nm accelerates cell renewal and repair, boosting collagen and elastin synthesis for smoother, firmer skin. 633nm is clinically proven to increase the body’s natural form of cellular energy (ATP) which in turn “kick starts” cells to regenerate faster. Red light boosts natural hydration levels, improves blood flow for increased tissue oxygenation and the lymphatic systems to eliminate toxins. Red light offers immediate visible results; skin feels hydrated and plump and radiance is restored.

LED Red Light is our collagen boosting colour, great for dry and dehydrated skin, to repair and restore skin post acne treatments or as an anti-aging boost for fine lines and wrinkles. Brides or those with a special occasion coming up will absolutely adore the results.

Key Benefits of RED LED LIGHT

  • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
  • Increases collagen and elastin synthesis
  • Improves complexion, texture and tone
  • Increases natural hydration
  • Stimulates circulation & lymphatic system
  • Shrinks enlarged pores
  • Restores radiance

830nm (Near INFRA RED light)

Near INFRA RED light is invisible to the naked eye. LED Phototherapy using Near Infrared LED’s significantly reduces both acute and chronic pain. 830nm LED Light triggers the anti-inflammatory processes to accelerate, repair and reduce irritation and redness to the skin.

Near Infrared light builds strength and integrity for compromised, environmentally damaged and sensitive skin conditions. Suited to treatment of severely impaired skins or burns successfully. It is also clinically effective in the treatment of age spots and pigmentation.

Near Infrared penetrates deeper into the skin than Red Light LED, delivering energy deeper into your skins dermis. Near infrared light stimulates circulation which improves blood and oxygen flow enhancing your skin’s metabolism. Near infrared light is also an effective treatment for pain, inflammation and injury in joints and muscles. It doesn’t just mask the pain but actually helps to treat the inflammation and injury causing the pain.

Great for sun damaged skin, pigmentation, rosacea and sensitive reactive skins as well as a boost for anti-aging.

Key Benefits of Near INFRARED (NIR) LED

  • Reduces pigmentation
  • Scar reduction and prevention
  • Relieves pain and inflammation
  • Advanced skin rejuvenation benefits
  • Treats rosacea
  • Calms redness and irritation
  • Reduces age spots and sun damage
  • Promotes healthy skin
  • Ideal for the most sensitive skins

Our Choice

The Australian Designed Medical Grade XEN LED System

Controlled Delivery ~ Client Safety ~ Clinical Results ~ Latest Technology

Clinically Proven Results

XEN LED systems uses Blue 415nm, Red 633nm and Near Infrared 830nm which are the ONLY internationally recognised and clinically evidenced wavelengths for LED Phototherapy.

High Safety Profile

XEN LED treatments are a safe, year round treatment which is beneficial for all skin types and conditions. LED Phototherapy does not damage cells, as with laser treatment for example, so there is no risk of burning or creating a response that would be irreversible.

Controlled Delivery

Each colour setting performs a unique function, delivering results specific to skin concerns. The Red and Near Infra-Red (NIR) light used are within the optical window in biological tissue, selectively allowing them to pass deeply into the skin stimulating the naturally occurring rejuvenation and repair processes.

Leading Technology

Delivering controlled focused light energy is the key to achieving the best results with LED Phototherapy and the XEN LED system achieves this better than any other LED system available in Australia.

The Xen LED Phototherapy system utilises the third generation LED technology to combine 415nm, 633nm, and 830nm on one panel while keeping treatment intensities that outperform all rivals.

Innovative “Chip on Board” (COB) technology allows the Xen LED to pack 10500 LED’s into one 5 panel array, optimising performance by increasing light intensity and reducing array heat.

With 3500 LED’s per colour on the Xen LED array, treatment times are dramatically reduced due to faster energy delivery.

Equipped with the Optimised Flat Distribution (OFT), energy is distributed evenly over the targeted area.

The Xen LED is the only LED in the Australian market which uses COB technology, which is why the XEN LED system is able to provide a higher power output than the Healite and Omnilux systems and deliver results in a shorter treatment time.

See Your Skin In A New Light

Harness the healing power of light for a total skin rejuvenation solution

What is involved in LED Phototherapy treatments?

All treatments commence with a COMPLIMENTARY Skin Analysis and Consultation with our Skin Specialist to determine any medical history that can affect the application or outcome of treatments.

From the results of your consultation and skin analysis, the appropriate and most beneficial settings of LED Phototherapy will be selected and programmed into the LED System.

Depending on the condition you are seeking to have LED treatment for, our Skin Specialist may recommend supplementary beneficial treatments such as exfoliation, peels or needling, that can enhance and accelerate treatment outcomes.

The LED session is administered from a special multi LED light panel that is positioned over the treatment area. The LED System we use is the XEN LED – a medical grade Australia TGA approved device with state of the art chip on board technology delivering controlled wavelength output, photon intensity and density to achieve optimal rejuvenation and healing outcomes.

For a session addressing a facial area you will be supplied with a pair of eye goggles that are merely to soften the bright light from the LED panel onto the eyelids making the treatment more comfortable. Having said that, for the first 30 seconds of a LED facial treatment, the light can be a little disconcerting, but you will soon relax to the light and may often find yourself dozing off or feeling like you are on a beach somewhere enjoying the gentle warmth of the sun.

The treatment time will be from 15 mins to 30 mins as decided by our Skin Specialist.

How many LED Treatments will I need?

Depending on one’s age, skin tone, diet and lifestyle, following a single LED Phototherapy treatment, clients can expect immediate improvement in skin tone, hydration and overall radiance which will continue in the following days. Redness and irritation are calmed. However, most changes occur naturally over a course of treatments.

The number of treatments required for optimum results is subject to a number of factors including indication, lifestyle factors and other procedures that may be included in the overall treatment programme. This will be assessed during the consultation. Typically, for skin rejuvenation, clients are treated two times per week over a period of time and many clients see and feel results after just one treatment. A course of 10 treatments is generally recommended followed by the occasional maintenance treatment every few months.

For post surgical wound healing we may recommend as many as three (3) combination red and near infrared treatments per week over a two (2) week period whilst observations are made of the wound healing progress.

For skin conditions such as acne and rosacea we recommend the two (2) treatments each week be combined with additional skin care treatments such as High Frequency Facials and/or IPL Laser Photorejuvenation to maximise results.

Results with LED Phototherapy are cumulative, and a course of treatments taken in close succession is recommended for optimum results. Results can last for several months and occasional maintenance treatments offer lasting improvement in the appearance and health of the skin.

In general, LED Phototherapy Treatments are an addition to other treatment courses such as IPL Photorejuvenation or dermal needling, to stimulate and enhance skin recovery and escalate skin repair periods and results.

CELEBRITY FANS of LED Phototherapy

Unlike other types of light therapy, LED’s do not contain ultraviolet rays, therefore they are safe for regular use.

LED light therapy doesn’t cause burns compared to other anti-aging treatments such as chemical peels, dermabrasion, and laser therapy. LED Light Therapy is safe for all skin colours and types.

You shouldn’t use LED Light Therapy if you take Accutane type prescription products for acne, or if you are experiencing skin rashes.

Side effects are rare, but may include some increased inflammation, redness, and rashes.

In-clinic procedures take from 15 to 30 minutes at a time. A course of ten (10) treatments are generally recommended so you may need to go back for up to 10 weeks, then only once every few months.

At-home LED devices can be used at your convenience without having to go to any appointments. The downside is that the results will not be as dramatic or ongoing in skin rejuvenation as they lack the ability of Medical Grade systems to provide controlled wavelength output, photon intensity and density to achieve optimal rejuvenation and healing outcomes.

A single LED light therapy session ranges from about $70 to $100, depending on whether you’re combining it with other treatments. Packages of LED treatments are available to purchase offering substantial discounts.

Just as there is NO PAIN associated with LED treatments, there is also NO DOWNTIME with LED Light treatments, so you can resume usual activities immediately.

  • Induce fast healing and decrease pain – Heightens internal skin call functions and induces faster healing.
  • Target active acne – Blue LED light therapy works effectively to target inflammatory acne.
  • Reduce acne-causing bacteria – Eliminates acne-causing bacteria that lives on the skin.
  • Quick and easy treatments – Sessions only last 15 to 30min so you can be in and out and looking your best in no time at all.

For best results avoid photosensitising medication before your treatment and don’t return to exercise until at least 24 hours after your treatment.

Used in combination with almost any medi-aesthetic procedure or treatment, this LED Light Therapy treatment will take your glow to a whole new level.

LED Light Therapy is safe if you a pregnant or breastfeeding – so you can have glowing, fresh rejuvenated yummy-mummy skin! This non-invasive, pain-free treatment is friendly for all skin tones, types and conditions.

LED Light Therapy was initially developed to aid in the recovery of wounds and post-surgery scars, without the harmful use of radiation. Now, you can undergo LED Light Therapy to assist with pain relief, superficial skin lesions, rosacea, burns or simply as an addition to your advanced skin care regimen.

LED Light Therapy - recent reported studies

First developed by NASA, that same organisation have recently conducted studies on the use of red LED light for the enhancement of cell growth and found that the application of specific wavelengths of light increased fibroblast activity and enhanced DNA synthesis leading to the production of new collagen.

  • A follow up study by Wisconsin Medical College demonstrated that the specific wavelengths of red LED light could be used to accelerate wound healing.
  • The American Academy of Dermatology has reported that blue LED light can be used to destroy the bacteria that produces the inflammation associated with propionbacterium acnes.
  • The British Journal of Dermatology has reported that the combination of specific red and blue light wavelengths can successfully treat acne.
  • A recent study at Hammersmith Hospital demonstrated that the combination of red and blue light phototherapy for the treatment of acne produced quicker results than the application of blue light alone.

Professional LED machines can minimise fine lines and wrinkles, treat sun-damage and stretch marks, and reduce redness after more aggressive IPL or laser treatments. The results of using just a LED treatment won’t be as dramatic as plastic surgery, IPL or laser, but it’s a gentler, more natural, and less expensive way to treat.

While we often associate light exposure with negative effects such as skin damage, the right kind/s of light has many positive influences on the body. It helps us produce vitamin D and provides energy and serotonin. It can also promote healing, reduce inflammation and pain and prevent tissue damage.

Whilst ongoing exposure to UV is very damaging, controlled levels of Red, Blue and Near infrared light are clinically proven to be beneficial.
